It’s pretty common where I live to hear people say that they love being in nature, and it is undoubtedly true for me too. But, there’s more to it than that. My mind recognizes the beauty in our surroundings, and my heart is fueled and inspired by the abundance, but my soul actually craves an authentic interaction with the natural world to thrive and be well.
I truly feel at my best when the elements could potentially destroy me at any given moment, and I have to keep my wits about me to survive. It calls my awareness into the moment and I feel an amazing presence and gratitude for life. It doesn’t have to be high intensity adrenalin sports, I am speaking more about a gentle nudge. Like, when the wind blows your coffee over or you can’t make dinner or feel the warmth until the fire is started.
I used to be absolutely terrified of the ocean. Over the years, through surfing and other experiences, that fear has grown into a deep reverence and respect. Learning how to surf and creating a dedicated yoga practice have been the most humbling, challenging, and ultimately joyful experiences in my life. I have learned how to shift from being scared, frustrated, or attached to what my ego believes that I “can’t” accomplish, to respect the power and magnificence of the ocean, my body, mother nature, and the absolute gift of being alive.
It’s hard to put into words, it’s hard to explain or “teach” to someone else… so I’m hoping that through a genuine invitation I can help to facilitate and hold space for other people to have these experiences and transitions. I’m hosting my first yoga and surf retreat with Janet Corvino and Soul City Yoga this September 8-11 at the Tofino Botanical Gardens. Janet and I will provide daily guided meditation, yoga practice, organic meals, and a workshop to outline some of the key principles in yoga philosophy.
We’re providing an experience that is local and accessible. An opportunity to get away from your daily grind and focus on relaxing, eating well, practicing yoga, and spending time on the Pacific Coast to re-connect with your soul and your truth. We’d love to have you join us for this experience! There will be time and opportunities to surf, but Tofino’s magical landscape also offers a sheltered inlet to stand up paddle board or enjoy calmer water. Or, you may prefer to indulge in the delicious local coffee and cuisine, relaxing, hiking, and enjoying the view.
